Maths

We have made our Kowhaiwhai Marae from our kowhaiwhai maths art. Please enjoy the photos of our art/mathswork!

We have been doing some kowhaiwhai patterns for geometry over the last two weeks.

It uses translation - this is when you get a 2D shape and slide, flip and rotate it to make a pattern.
First, we drew a maori pattern like a koru this was our template. Next we drew the outline of it onto a sheet of paper - that is where we chose our transformation, to either slide, flip or rotate. This is when we chose our pattern and kept tracing the shape over and over to make the pattern.

It was quite hard to trace the pattern, this was our good copy. After we did the kowhaiwhai tracing around then we did the colouring in with the pastels. We were told to use 3 colours.

We used pastel to colour them in and we are going to use hairspray to keep the pastel in place.
They are really attractive because they have lots of bright colours and they have patterns and patterns are really pleasing to the human eye.

Come to Room 13 to see our Kowhaiwhai Geometry transformation patterns!

This term we are going to be focusing on geometry, in particular, how 3D shapes look when they are broken down (nets) and their attributes.  We will be reviewing anything required this term, so expect a little bit of everything from adding and subtracting to multiplication and division.
